CENTRAL IOWA APRS Maps
IACEN250.map Central-IA Counties(20+) APRS Map
IAMET250.map Large Scale DM-Metro APRS Map
IADM250.map Smaller Scale DM-City & Suburbs APRS Map
This is an upgraded/updated revision of the nationally distributed DMIA200.map
and contains additions, a few corrections, and a other changes as compared to
older maps. USERS NOTE: This new series of maps REQUIRES vers 3.13 or later
of APRS to run! [Versions 4.00 to 4.02 were used during construction of the
current maps.]
The biggest addition in this series is the 20 county map of Central Iowa. It
contains federal roadways, major waterways, county lines, county seats,
and a few other major cities. {Note DM and metro area cities are not
indicated; ran out of map label space!} All important features are labeled,
with the labels showing up when you zoom down to the 16 mile range. Lots of
labels make the map crowded, but remember, you can 'Turn OFF' the labels
by using the Alt-F, then L key combo in APRS. [You can also turn off other
features such as water or roadways if you want to get them out of the way.]
In order to accommodate a more detailed map of the Metro area, I found it
necessary to develop two maps: 1) Concentrating on the City of Des Moines
and it's suburbs inside or near the I-235/I-35/I-80 loop, and 2) Another
concentrating on the area outside of the interstate loop. The larger area
metro map kicks in at the 8 mile range, while the smaller denser DM map
doesn't appear until you zoom into the 4 mile range. Remember that you
can switch back and forth between the last two maps within or greater than
the zoom range by using the 'Alt-U' keys. This will be necessary at times
because when zooming and or using the HOME key, APRS will change maps based
on some internal calculations, even tho you might not want it to do so.
Just use the Alt-U to get to the other map. I have also added many labels,
although I still don't like the way they shift around when zooming. Labels
for the larger features appear at the higher mileage ranges, while street
labels won't show up until the map is zoomed to 1 mile for the DM map, or 2
miles for the larger Metro map. [Some labels for smaller features won't
appear until the .5 mile range is reached].
TO USE THE NEW MAPS: You must copy the THREE appropriate map lines into the
MAPLIST.APR file. Be sure to place them below the Iowa County and Boone/Ames
map lines, with the Metro map above the City map, or they won't work
properly. I suggest that you also change the range for the Boone/Ames map
from 38 to 20 to increase the 'loadability' of the DM maps. [If you are
located in Ames or Boone you may or may not want to do this, although I can't
find any problems associated with changing the ranges.] For your convenience
I have included below all of the mapline additions to the MAPLIST file for
all known Iowa maps. If you received this document and map files on a disk,
then more than likely the maps for Ames/Boone and the Iowa Counties will be
included as well. Be sure you copy the maps themselves to the MAPS
subdirectory of the APRS directory. Also remember to remove or
* out lines that reference older Metro-DM being superceded by this version
(such as IADM200.map,IAMET200.map, DMIA100.map or IADMoins.map).
{If you received this file on disk, I also included the latest version of
APRS, along with a properly constructed MAPLIST.APR file, which can replace
the .apr file that appears when you unzip the APRS package. Be sure to copy
the new maps to the MAPS subdirectory after unzipping, or you won't see the
maps at all!}
The following lines should appear in order in the MAPLIST.APR(MAP) file:
IAcontys.map,42,93.7,135,
IABoAmes.map,41.9,93.7,20, Combined Boone and Ames maps
IACEN250.map,41.66,93.37,70, Central Iowa Counties by KG0DW, Vers 2.50
IAMET250.map,41.61,93.68,10, Metro-DM map by KG0DW, Vers 2.50
IADM250.map,41.61,93.68,6, DM & Suburbs by KG0DW, Vers 2.50
